Could $50 in groceries actually feed two adults for a full week… without running out of food, living on ramen, or feeling miserable?

I decided to test it myself using normal groceries, simple meals, and real food we’d actually want to eat. $50 total. 2 adults. 7 days. Every meal. Even snacks.
The goal is:
- “Regular” people food from grocery stores, no warehouse club memberships.
- Everyday kitchen tools, not fancy kitchen equipment.
- Standard ingredients, no weird heavily processed or poor quality food
I wanted to know if this was actually possible… or if people trying this were simply running out of ideas before they ran out of food.
So I bought the groceries, made the meals, tracked what worked, what didn’t, and what surprised me most by the end of the week. And one thing caught me completely off guard. If you’ve ever wondered how to stretch groceries further, build a better meal system, or make simple ingredients work harder for you, this one’s for you.
I turned the full grocery list, meal plan, and written recipes into a free printable guide so you can use it yourself: https://jennifermaker.kit.com/real-meals-for-less
