We Made an Easy Workbench for Maker Farm + a Tractor Ride!

Our weekend Maker Farm project is this 10-foot workbench for our pole barn. It is very simple and made from 2x4s, 2x8s, and 4x4s — all basic lumber from the home improvement store. It cost us under $100 to make and took only a few hours. More importantly, it was built LARGE to hold our stuff and ADJUSTABLE to fit an uneven floor. Includes a bonus ride on our antique Farmall tractor, because the tractor was in our way and we decided to hop on for a little ride just for fun. Tools we used:

  • Table Saw
  • Cordless Drill
  • Cordless Jigsaw
  • Level
  • Mallet

Materials we used:

  • Eight (8) 2″x4″x10′ lumber (can be shorter for a smaller workbench)
  • Four (4) 2″x8″x10′ lumber (can be shorter for a smaller workbench)
  • Four (4) 4″x4″x8′ cedar posts
  • box of wood screws long enough to go through 2″x4″s
  • (optional) pegboard panel(s)

Super Easy Workbench Instructions:

  1. 1. Cut the 4″x4″ posts to the right height. We cut two (2) posts to 84″ high and six (6) posts to 36″ high.
  2. 2. Make a frame for the top of your workbench from 2″x4″ lumber. Add cross-wise pieces to support the legs and top.
  3. 3. Put the frame over the posts, adjust to the right height, and screw in place when level. Adjust as needed if your floor is not level.
  4. 4. Add the 2″x8″ boards on the frame to create your workbench top. You may need to create notches in the back-most board to go around the posts.
  5. 5. Build another frame for the bottom shelf, but this time add lengthwise pieces to support a shelf.
  6. 6. Place the workbench inside the bottom frame, shimmy it up and off the ground with 2″x4″s, then screw in place when level.
  7. 7. Build a shelf from one 2″x4″ and one 2″x8″ board, then screw in place.
  8. 8. Attach a pegboard to the back with screws, taking special care that the holes are not too uneven. We had to use a part of another pegboard, since our workbench was so long — cover the seam with white electrical tape.

Finished dimensions: 10 feet long, 7 feet high, and 30″ deep. Work surface is 36″ high.
